How to make your Mac louder

Software can take your Mac past 100%, but "louder" and "better" are two different problems. macOS stops at 100% because that is the point where the signal is passing through at full strength, with nothing held in reserve. A booster app goes further by multiplying the samples themselves. That genuinely does get louder, and every decibel above unity pushes the music's peaks closer to the hard ceiling of digital audio, where they flatten out into crunchy distortion. Apps advertising "500% volume" are either clipping your music or compressing it flat to hide the clipping. What actually helps is usually three smaller things together: loudness compensation for quiet listening, a modest boost with a limiter behind it, and EQ, because a few decibels in the right frequency range sounds far louder than the same gain applied to everything at once.
That's the short version. The rest of this page explains each one, and is honest about what built-in laptop speakers can and cannot physically do.
Why macOS stops at 100%
Digital audio has an absolute maximum level, called full scale. Music is mastered so its loudest peaks sit just below it. When your Mac's volume slider is at 100%, that signal is passing through at full strength; there is no hidden reserve that macOS is keeping from you.
So going louder means one of two things. Either you drive the analog amplifier harder, which software isn't allowed to do on built-in outputs, or you multiply the digital samples before they reach it. Every volume booster on the Mac does the second one. The question is never whether it works (it does) but what happens to the peaks when it does.
What "500% volume" actually does
Five times the amplitude is roughly +14 dB. Take a track whose peaks already reach within a decibel of full scale, add 14 dB, and those peaks now want to go far beyond the ceiling. There is nothing beyond the ceiling. Everything above it is chopped flat. That's hard clipping, and it's the fizzy, crunchy edge you hear on loud passages while the quiet ones still sound fine.
An app boosting that hard has two options: let you hear the clipping, or run heavy compression that pulls the peaks down and pushes everything else up. The second one is louder and cleaner, but it flattens the difference between loud and quiet, which is most of what makes music feel alive. Neither is free, and neither is what the marketing implies.
A realistic figure for how much clean gain is available on already-mastered material is a few decibels, not fourteen.
What actually works
1. Loudness compensation, for quiet listening
Human hearing is not equally sensitive at all frequencies, and the imbalance gets worse as things get quieter. At low levels the bass and the top end fall away faster than the midrange, which is why quiet music sounds thin rather than simply quiet. Loudness compensation corrects for that: it gently lifts the extremes as you turn down, and backs off to nothing at full volume.
This is the one option on the list that costs you no headroom at all: you aren't adding level, you're restoring tonal balance for the level you're already at. For late-night listening it usually fixes the actual complaint better than volume does.
2. A modest boost, with a limiter behind it
Some gain is genuinely useful and safe: quiet recordings, badly mastered podcasts, video calls where someone is too far from their microphone. What matters is what happens when a peak arrives. A limiter placed after the gain catches those peaks and holds them under the ceiling instead of letting them clip.
EQBase offers up to +6 dB (double the amplitude) with a limiter permanently last in the chain, after the EQ and after every other effect, so nothing downstream can undo its work. We stop at +6 dB on purpose: past that point you are no longer making audio louder, you are rebuilding it. At and below unity the limiter stays out of the signal entirely and only engages if a genuine overshoot arrives, so ordinary listening is never touched.
3. EQ where your ears are most sensitive
Perceived loudness is dominated by the 1–4 kHz region, roughly where speech lives, and where human hearing is at its most sensitive. Three decibels there sounds considerably louder than three decibels applied across the whole spectrum, and it costs you a fraction of the headroom.
In practice this is the fix for dialogue you can't make out in films and podcasts: a broad, gentle lift around 2 kHz does more than any amount of volume. Keep it small; the same region is the one that becomes fatiguing fastest.
4. Turn up the quiet app, not everything
Often the problem isn't your Mac, it's one app that's much quieter than the rest. Raising the system volume to compensate makes everything else too loud. Per-app volume solves it directly; see per-app volume control on a Mac for the ways to do that.
Bass on laptop speakers: what's possible, what isn't
This is where most advice on the subject quietly misleads people. A MacBook's speakers are physically small, and a small driver moves a small amount of air. Below roughly 100 Hz there is very little output available no matter what an equalizer claims to be doing.
Boosting 40–60 Hz on speakers like these does not create bass. It asks the driver for movement it cannot deliver, and what comes back is distortion that smears the midrange, so the result sounds worse overall while technically measuring as "more bass". Three things work better:
- Lift 100–200 Hz instead of 40–60 Hz. This is upper bass and lower midrange, where a small driver still produces real output. It's where the body of a kick drum and the working harmonics of a bass guitar live.
- Let your ear fill in the rest. Given a series of harmonics, human hearing infers the fundamental note even when that note isn't physically present: the missing fundamental effect. It is the reason emphasis at 100–200 Hz reads convincingly as bass on hardware that cannot reproduce bass at all.
- Cut before you boost. The boxy, congested quality of small speakers usually lives around 300–500 Hz. Taking a couple of decibels out of there often does more for perceived bass than adding anything at the bottom, because it uncovers what's already present instead of piling more on top.
On headphones the rules change completely: real low-frequency extension is available, and the better tool is a correction curve measured for your specific model rather than a generic bass boost.
A note on hearing
Worth saying plainly, because most articles on this topic skip it. Sustained listening at high levels carries a real risk of permanent hearing damage, and the risk climbs quickly as level goes up.
The situation where people quietly reach damaging levels is boosting to overcome background noise on a plane, a train, or in a café, because the noise masks how loud the music actually is. Isolation solves that problem far better than gain does. If you find yourself needing a large boost only in noisy places, the answer is probably closed or in-ear headphones rather than more decibels.

Common questions
Is it safe to push a Mac above 100%?
For the software, yes: you cannot damage a Mac by applying digital gain. For the audio, it depends entirely on whether something is catching the peaks: gain with a limiter behind it is clean, gain without one clips. For your ears, moderation is the whole answer.
Why is my Mac so much quieter with certain headphones?
Headphones differ enormously in how much level they produce from the same signal. Efficient in-ears go very loud from almost nothing; larger studio headphones can need far more drive than a laptop output comfortably provides. If a specific pair is always too quiet, that's a hardware mismatch, and a headphone amplifier or USB interface fixes it properly where software can only paper over it.
Does boosting the volume reduce audio quality?
Gain on its own doesn't; multiplying samples is mathematically clean. Clipping is what degrades quality, and clipping is what happens when gain is applied without headroom management. This is why the limiter matters more than the maximum number an app advertises.
Will an equalizer make my MacBook speakers sound like real speakers?
No, and anything claiming otherwise is overselling. EQ can correct tonal balance, recover clarity, and get meaningfully closer to what a recording is supposed to sound like. It cannot produce output a driver is physically incapable of producing. The improvement on built-in speakers is real but bounded; on headphones it is much larger.
Do I need an equalizer just to turn the volume up?
Not necessarily, but the two problems overlap more than people expect. Most "my Mac isn't loud enough" complaints turn out to be tonal balance rather than level, which is why loudness compensation and a small midrange lift so often solve what a volume boost doesn't.
